Hi HN, I built a dictation app called Vokalu for Windows and Mac. It works by pressing 2 keys and speaking then formats the text.
I built this because all of the other options were super expensive or resource heavy on my PC & Mac but loved the functionality.
What's different from the other apps out there.
1. On device if you want it. Private mode downloads a speech model once (either 290mb or 970mb) and recognizes speech on your computer without the server side connecting.
2. It's super small. Rust + Tauri. In the background it used 119mb on windows and 110mb on Mac. The biggest competitor we have used 569 on Windows and 999 on Mac in a localized test we ran.
3. No subscription. Cloud dictation is 1.5 cents per minute and 2 cents with formatting and corrections on.
4. Reads only what it needs. The app's name, the browser & site name. No screenshots and we never store audio. The history also lives on your computer entirely.
Not open sourced and no Linux or mobile (yet working on it though) and signin is through email (it carries the credit)
If you are up for helping me out you can use SHOWHN as a code to get a free $2 worth of usage
