Show HN: Where Were We

https://wherewerewe.app/

A little web game I made as an anniversary present for my wife.

Upload vacation photos and make them into a game.

WWW uses EXIF to determine where and when the photo was taken. This is then turned into a game you can send to anyone.

I had hoped that society had learned better than to tolerate "upload all your data and we'll give you a cute little game" back in the era of Facebook games.

There's no privacy policy, no data usage policy, no contact information, just "upload all your photos and we'll retain them forever and offer them up to whoever you share a URL with"

OP is simply sharing a little game he made for a family member and inviting others to play with it. That's just the kind of thing Show HN is for.

A project like this doesn't need a privacy policy or a data policy, and it doesn't need to address social problems. If we're going to start imposing bureaucratic checklists and social burdens on little projects, that would smother them and kill all the fun.

If a project like this turns into Facebook, legal teams will do the needful. In the meantime let's use HN respond to people's projects in the intended spirit: fun, curious, creative.

In today's world of everyone buying up all the data they can to train LLMs, the trust that any "simple little project" isn't doing that is gone.

A couple of sentences saying "pictures won't be used for anything and will be retained for X days" goes a long way to reassuring even if there isn't source code or any way to verify them.

Legalistic objections ought not to be the first reactions to appear to a project like this. That's not the intended spirit of this site.

It's all too easy for generic criticisms to pop up first in a thread because they come to mind so quickly. It takes little effort to fire these off or put down someone else's work, and it's gratifying to assume the worst about others.

In this case you led with your feelings about social issues. Those are important feelings about important issues, but in a thread like this, they are a bummer—doubly so when there hasn't yet been time for more interesting comments to appear. What incentive do people have to share anything if they can expect to get scolded and told that society ought not to tolerate it?

That's why I'm replying at such length; probably too intensely, sorry! It stirs up feelings for me too. I don't intend any of it personally—I just know how sensitive to initial conditions HN threads are.
