"birds" and "hedgehogs", I think people have to switch between the two even within themselves, most likely with a preference.

If this switching is common, there should be well-known examples of birds who think they are frogs?? Maybe not Grothendieck either? It'd be somebody who can't help building theory to solve very specific problems..
