MacPacker is a free and open-source archive manager for macOS that I've been building for the past three years, with a focus on browsing archives instead of extracting everything first.

Open a .7z, .tar.lz4, .dmg, .rpm or .squashfs and browse the contents directly. Browse nested archives, search inside them, preview files, or drag out only the files you actually need.

It supports 40+ extensions across 36 formats through three engines (7-Zip, XAD/The Unarchiver and SWCompression), with automatic fallback when one engine can't parse a file.

MacPacker started because I needed to extract a single file from a nested archive. The existing workflow meant extracting the outer archive, then the next one, and so on, just to get that one file.

With v0.18, MacPacker is starting to become more than a browser/extractor. It can now create ZIP archives and edit existing ones: add and delete entries and save the archive in place.

The direction from here is toward a full open-source archive manager for macOS, in the territory of something like 7-Zip: more writable formats, mounting archives in Finder, integrity/recovery tools and deeper Finder integration.

Current limitations: writing is ZIP-only, archives can't be mounted yet (I'm looking at FSKit), password-protected archives still have some rough edges, and it's 0.x with breaking changes ahead.

MacPacker is free and open source (GPL-3.0), sandboxed and notarized. It's available through the Mac App Store, Homebrew and GitHub Releases.

With the help of the community, MacPacker has also been translated into 13 languages besides English, with roughly 80% of the translations complete so far.

Excellent work. Please consider supporting browsing remote zip files (and potentially other formats, if able) over http.

Wow. I didn't even know this is possible. I have created a GitHub issue (number #183) to track this.
